Its evident presence has already started taking its toll in different parts of the world in the forms of big floods, devastating storms and erratic weather conditions.

Because of this, more and more environmental advocates are calling for the switch to renewable energy sources that don’t emit carbon that block the heat on earth from escaping and eventually increases global warming.

It is obvious that industries that operate on fossil fuels take the big chunk of the blame, but it doesn’t mean that we as individuals are in the clear.Yes, there is really a need for us to minimize, if not totally eradicate our dependence on fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy sources—-bu t what are the different forms of renewable energy?

Renewable energy is that energy that comes from sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat. In fact, 19% of the total world energy consumption came from renewable sources. Out of that 19%, 13% came from biomass, 3.2% from hydroelectricity and the 2.7% came from the sum of modern biomass, wind, solar, geothermal and biofuels.

Of all these renewables,it seems that wind power is on the constant rise in terms of popularity. Growing at annual rate of 30%, this renewable source of power is widespread in terms of use in the USA, Europe and Asia.On the other hand, the biggest solar thermal power is located in the Mojave Desert while the largest geothermal plant is The Geysers in California. On the other hand, Brazil provides 18% of its country’s total automotive fuel in the form of ethanol fuel which is a product of sugarcane.

It’s true that many large industries are finding viable ways to make use of renewable energy but it’s also a fact that individual households are also doing their share. Survey have revealed that an average of 300 million houses around the globe are powered by solar electric panels either totally off the grid or partially off the grid.

It’s sad to think that without the adverse effects of global warming, many of us wouldn’t have thought seriously about renewable energy sources.

Let’s just hope and pray that all these efforts for finding or perfecting renewable energy sources are not too late to save our environment and ourselves.

Now the question, what is the difference between the tow and which is actually better?

On the other hand, solar panels can actually make your house look horrendous because of their size and how they are mounted on the roof. I’ve heard many people commenting on houses with solar panels that these houses look like space labs or that the panels look like satellites. So, in the aesthetics category, shingles win over panels.

Proceeding to functionality, since solar panels are mounted on adjustable metal frame on the roof,they can be angled in certain ways that will ensure their maximum absorption of the sunlight and heat. This is where the solar shingles fall short. Since they are permanently fixed on the roof, they stay fixed in their position. Another disadvantage of the shingles is that the roof structure has to be modified( or be totally changed) for them to be installed. In the case of panels, this is not necessary. Why? Because panels can just be mounted on the part of the roof where sunlight is optimum. Needless to say, this round goes to solar panels.

So, if you’re really planning to go solar powered think about the pros and cons of both choices. If you are a person who places much value and importance on beauty and have enough money to spend for shingles, then go for it. However, if you are practical and care about function more than beauty, then solar panels are for you.

Either way, there’s no denying that you’ll be able to help the government by consuming a clean source of energy that doesn’t pollute the environment.

But don’t limit your imagination. Let it thrive. Think of other ways on how to take advantage of the clean power from the sun. Uhmmm….I have a suggestion. Why don’t you use solar energy to power your sheds? I mean, why don’t you have a solar power shed?

Solar power shed? What in the world is that? You ask.

Well, to put it simply, a solar power shed is nothing more than your typical garden shed that is made of wood and is only one storey. What makes it different is that, the lights used to illuminate the inside runs on solar energy. With the solar power shed, you don’t have to pay any amount for the electricity while you look for those missing tools you need or when you stack whatever needs to be stacked. The conventional way to provide power to a garden shed is to have extension wires connected to the shed from the nearest electrical outlet. The cons: a)It is dependent on the weather and on particular hours of the day.
b)It requires a large area for its panels to absorb more light.

2. Wind Energy. This alternative energy source relies on winds to produce electricity, thus, it also burns nothing that produces carbon which damages the environment. In short, it’s environmentally friendly too and can’t be depleted.

The cons: a) The turbines are an eyesore and noisy
b) The turning turbines are a threat to the birds.

3. Hydroelectric energy. This alternative energy source produces power with the aid of water. This seems to be the most reliable energy source because it can produce electricity in large quantities.

The cons: a) Its dams alter the natural river flow, thus, it affects the wildlife.
b) The cold water and oxygen poor water that it releases to the river can kill the fish.
c)The displacement of the water from the dam can bring flooding.

4. Geothermal energy. This makes use of the steam coming from the inside part of the earth. It can operate 24/7.

The cons: a) Finding and drilling areas where it can be possible is a difficult and expensive.
b)It can cause the release of some toxic chemicals along with the steam.

5. Biomass energy. This produces energy from wood and agricultural wastes. It definitely minimizes the landfill.

The cons: a) Transportation of the waste is costly.
b)It can affect the ecological diversity of a land.
c) The process is complicated.

6. Ocean energy. It is a clean and abundant form of energy.

The cons: a) It operates on high cost
b)The construction of its pipelines can damage the aquatic ecosystem.
